Destroy Boys – Botanique

Destroy Boys – Botanique

On the 7th of February, I attended a concert for the rock/punk band Destroy Boys with some friends. I’ve known and thoroughly enjoyed their music for a few years now, so I was thrilled to go see them perform live at the Orangerie hall at Botanique concert venue in Saint-Josse.

The opening band on before them was called Gaffa Tape Sandy. I hadn’t heard of them before but they had some songs that I really enjoyed such as Energy or My Desperate House.

Destroy Boys played a lot of songs from their newer albums but also some of their most popular older songs. The setlist of their UK/EU tour includes Shadow (I’m Breaking Down), Crybaby, Drink, Plucked, K Street Walker, Vixen, Bad Guy, Beg for the Torture, Should’ve Been Me, Muzzle, Amor divino, Boyfeel, Fences, You Hear Yes, Piedmont, and the excellent I Threw Glass at My Friend’s Eyes and Now I’m on Probation.

The only negative aspect of the concert, but unfortunately one that was not possible to ignore, was that, throughout both bands’ sets, the sound balance was off in such a way that all the instruments made the vocals barely audible most of the time. Listening to songs I hadn’t heard before felt like a guessing game to decipher and form a proper idea of the melody lines and lyrics in my head.  I’m not sure if this problem was due in part to the acoustics of the venue but I would find it unlikely as I’ve attended multiple other concerts in that exact room and never noticed this problem to the extent it was present last Friday February 7th.

Regardless, as frustrating as this was, it didn’t take too much away from the overall experience and my enjoyment of it. Destroy Boys’ lead singer’s stage presence was spectacular, the instrumentalists were very skilled, and the music was great.
