On Friday the 20th of March 2026, our class band performed Me Gustas Tu by Manu Chao at our school’s Talent show in the Acte 3 venue in Braine L’Alleud. Admission to perform at the event was audition based however, as the s7 music 4 class we were guaranteed a place. there were 24 acts in the show, spanning from s1 students to s7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overarching theme this year was that of linguistic and cultural diversity, and performers were encouraged to present pieces in multiple languages, especially ones other than English. we chose to play Me Gustas Tu as it already includes Spanish and French, and we changed the lyrics in the last verse to replace every “me gustas tu” with an approximate translation into six other languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setting up and rehearsing for this song was quite a complicated process. It was decided that we’d have four people on vocals – two on each voice line (though that ended up changing last minute), and only a guitar and ukulele playing the accompaniment. the only other instruments we used were a flute during the instrumental section in the middle, and a tambourine and cajon for percussion. i personally think this distribution was a bit lacking in depth, and made our performance sound a bit more bland than Manu Chao generally should, but this might also be because we couldn’t realistically recreate the recordings of speech that are in the original on a live stage, and those add a lot to the song. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days before the talent show, we performed in a mini concert at school to identify the issues in our performance, and we decided that the distrbution of voices wasn’t working so we switched Lukass who was on the melody with me to help the other two on on the harmony, and ironed out some confusion with the rest, which meant that on the day of, we performed very well thanks to our rehearsal time and cosidering our limitations. Though we did commit a few mistakes: I, for example, sang the wrong harmony a couple times, and did’nt notice i was banging the tambourine on beats 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4 for a large part of the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
