SNAKE rehearsals

SNAKE rehearsals

Since around May 2025 I’ve been preparing for SNAKE, a new opera by Howard Moody with the ‘La Monnaie’ choir, though more consistent rehearsals started in September.

SNAKE is a ‘scenic concert’ by the same composer as SOLAR, the previous opera that was written for our choir, Howard Moody, but this one has a much bigger focus on movement and dance in the staging. The music is contemporary, with complex harmonies and rhythms and wide use of dissonance, and there’s a lot of it – it’s definitely one of the most demanding projects we’ve done so far.

The piece is based on a true story, that of the kidnapping of Ines Giaux – our conductor’s wife – ‘s father. it’s extremely emotional to be a part of, and that’s reflected both in the music and in the libretto and staging. The rehearsals have been intense, and will continue to be as we approach the show date in December, especially with how much physical work is involved. It’s been a big challenge balancing the singing with all the choreography, but also really rewarding to see it coming together.

SNAKE world premiere will be performed at La Monnaie Opera Theatre on the 20th December 2025 (two performances).

Libretto by Anna Moody. Based on Eulogy for a Man Who Still Lives: a book written by the dancer María Sara Villa.
